Dyeing Technique

The dyes are obtained entirely through natural fermentation and boiling processes.

They are carefully blended into botanical dye pastes for use β€”

among them, green persimmon dye requires over a year of fermentation to achieve its rich depth and concentration.

Β

Each piece is hand-brushed by the artisan.

During dyeing, the fabric is either hung or laid flat,

and a wool brush dipped in botanical dye paste is used to apply the color layer by layer β€”

a deeper tone, then a lighter one β€”

creating an ink-wash gradient effect reminiscent of traditional Chinese brush painting.

Β

After coloring, the fabric undergoes a three-wash, three-sun process.

It must be fully exposed to sunlight for an extended period,

allowing the natural pigments to oxidize and fuse into the fibers,

resulting in vivid and enduring hues.

This repeated washing and sun-drying further stabilizes the color,

overcoming the common issue of poor color fastness found in many natural dyes.
